What is team coaching?
-
In 2023, the International Coaching Federation (ICF) formally recognized team coaching as a distinct discipline, establishing new and unique accreditation and certification standards specific to this domain.
-
Team coaching is distinct from the disciplines of team training, facilitation, and consulting, although it shares elements with each:
- Unlike team training, which focuses on transferring information from speaker to listener, team coaching is a deeply participatory learning journey shaped by teams' self-observations.
- Unlike facilitation, which steers teams towards task completion or problem-solving, team coaching enhances team dynamics and cohesion to improve a team's ability to tackle tasks.
- Unlike consulting, which provides specific advice and directives, team coaching provides nuanced insights that enable managers to better understand team dynamics and identify necessary actions for success.
And to clarify, in our context, team coaching doesn't involve someone on a field with a clipboard and whistle, barking orders at athletes—though we're happy to embrace Ted Lasso as our industry mascot!

Team coaching at Brightside largely follows the Organizational Relationship and Systems Coaching (ORSC) model developed by CRR Global. This interactive approach encourages participants to view their relationships from new perspectives and actively align them with team goals.
A Brightside coach guides client teams through reflective and playful exercises to enhance communication and relational dynamics. These exercises include de-personalizing discussions on sensitive topics, empathizing by experiencing others' viewpoints, and collaboratively shaping the team's narrative. Each exercise promotes relational awareness and emotional agility, crucial for sustainable team growth.
During exercises, the coach provides real-time feedback on participants' interactions and systemic behaviors, facilitating shifts towards more effective collaboration.

Brightside Team Coaching offers tailored sessions designed to achieve each client's specific objectives. Sessions are conducted either online for efficiency and convenience, or in person for enhanced impact. Our offerings range from immersive half or full-day workshops to long-term development programs spanning several months. In-person sessions are typically conducted in a circular seating arrangement without tables, utilizing stickies, flipcharts, and physical space to engage participants fully. For online sessions, we utilize Zoom and digital tools like whiteboards and interactive elements to foster creative and intuitive participation. Throughout, our collaborative approach ensures we deliver customized learning and growth experiences aligned with each team's unique needs.
